This series is created using the traditional Iranian calligraphy pen, or "ghalam." The Kamish pen is made from reed that grows by the river and has been used by Iranian calligraphers for over 500 years. The bamboo pen, one of the oldest tools used for calligraphy, has a beveled edge that is used to make a wide variety of marks.
These pieces reference the letters used in the Farsi and Arabic languages. While individual letters are used as the starting point for each piece, the works also reference abstract expressionist compositions.
This series is based on the Persian musical system called the "radif." In this ancient musical tradition, there are 7 distinct modes or “dastgahs” with characteristic intervals, sounds, and rhythms that evoke distinct moods. This series of paintings is a visual response to each of these 7 modes using gouache, graphite, and ink on paper.
